Announcement and Construction
The Temple was announced to the public on August 7, 2002, by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, and the groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on September 23, 2002, led by Spencer J. Condie. Following the closure of the fifth and sixth floors on August 1, 2002, demolition began, paving the way for construction that commenced in spring 2003. The public open house attracted impressive attendance from May 8 to June 5, 2004, with 53,000 participants. The dedication of the Temple took place on June 13, 2004, again by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who expressed a desire for peace amidst turmoil in the world.
Architectural Features
The design of the Manhattan New York Temple includes several distinct elements:
- Size and Height: Covering 20,630 square feet and standing 120 feet tall, the Temple is constructed on a compact 0.3-acre site at an elevation of 80 feet.
- Exterior and Interior Aesthetics: The exterior flaunts a Travertine finish, while the site features notable glass art resembling flowing water. Inside, the art glass showcases a prominent mural of Christ on the road to Emmaus, backlit windows, and olive branch motifs. Further interior artwork includes depictions inspired by local landscapes.
- Innovative Light Fixtures: A combination of backlit synthetic Venetian art glass windows and unique hanging fixtures illuminates both the interior and exterior spaces.
Upcoming Renovations
On March 2, 2024, the Manhattan New York Temple closed for extensive renovations anticipated to last approximately three years. During this time, individuals in the Temple district are encouraged to attend either the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple or the Hartford Connecticut Temple. An announcement regarding dates for a public open house and rededication will be made closer to the completion of the renovations.
