The Manhattan New York Temple is a notable addition to the skyline of New York City. Nestled at the intersection of West 65th Street, Broadway, and Columbus Avenue, this remarkable site serves a vital role in the religious landscape of the city.
A Brief History
The Manhattan New York Temple became the 119th dedicated Temple in operation upon its dedication on June 13, 2004, by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This location was originally announced to the public on August 7, 2002, with the groundbreaking occurring shortly thereafter on September 23 of the same year. After significant construction efforts, including the gutting and soundproofing of the building to create a dedicated space for the Temple, it officially opened to the public from May 8 to June 5, 2004. A total of 53,000 people toured its halls during the open house.
Inspired by the challenges of finding a suitable location in New York City, the Church made a clever adaptation by integrating the Temple into an existing building, a multipurpose stake center built in 1976. This was done after efforts to build a separate facility faced opposition from local residents.
Architectural Features
The Manhattan New York Temple spans an impressive 20,630 square feet and reaches a height of 120 feet. The Temple’s exterior is adorned with Travertine, providing a distinctive look that distinguishes it from surrounding buildings. A notable feature is its single attached end spire topped with a 10-foot Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, which was installed on October 9, 2004.
The interiors are equally striking, designed with meticulous attention to detail. Visitors can find unique elements such as medium-stain oak doors and door hardware influenced by the Statue of Liberty. The interior art glass includes a prominent mural of Christ on the road to Emmaus and intricately designed windows that mimic natural daylight.

During this time, members in the temple district are encouraged to attend the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple or the Hartford Connecticut Temple. As construction progresses, dates for a public open house and rededication will be announced.

The building’s design incorporates innovative elements like door handles shaped like the Statue of Liberty torch and a time capsule placed in the cornerstone during dedication, filled with New York memorabilia and scriptures.
