The Manti Utah Temple is a beautiful place that truly stands out in the Sanpete Valley. As the third temple dedicated in Utah Territory, it has a rich history and has become a beloved symbol of faith and community for many people.
The story of the Manti Utah Temple began on June 25, 1875, when it was announced, exciting everyone in the area. Just under two years later, on April 25, 1877, Brigham Young presided over the groundbreaking, setting in motion an incredible journey to create a wonderful spiritual haven.
Located on Temple Hill at an elevation of 5,657 feet, the temple offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Its exterior features lovely, cream-colored oolite limestone, sourced from local quarries, giving it both beauty and strength. This unique stone connects the temple to the land, making it a true reflection of the area’s natural charm.
Over the years, the Manti Utah Temple has been the site of many meaningful moments. After a private dedication by Wilford Woodruff on May 17, 1888, the temple opened to the public from May 21-23, under the leadership of Lorenzo Snow. Each part of this temple has a story to tell, highlighting the dedication and spirit of those who have come before us.
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the stunning twin self-supporting spiral staircases. These elegant staircases wind their way up five stories in the octagonal towers and are not just functional—they’re truly an engineering marvel. The craftsmanship is remarkable, with smooth walnut handrails that showcase the skill and care of the builders.
For an impressive 133 years, the endowment sessions were brought to life through live performances, charming everyone who attended. This cherished tradition continued until the temple closed for some important renovations on October 2, 2021. Everyone is now looking forward to the public open house scheduled from March 14 through April 5, 2024, and the excitement is building for the rededication ceremony on April 21, 2024, led by Prophet Russell M. Nelson.
The Manti Utah Temple has faced its share of challenges, too! In 1928, a lightning storm struck the east tower, setting off a fire that burned for three long hours before the brave firefighters could put it out. This event only showed how strong and resilient this beloved temple—and the community—really is.
