The announcement of the Meridian Idaho Temple occurred on April 2, 2011, during the 181st General Conference by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. At the time, Meridian was experiencing rapid growth, being the third largest city in Idaho with a 115 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010. This period saw the organization of three new stakes in Meridian and four in nearby Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton, while being just 11 miles west of Boise, the capital city.
The groundbreaking took place on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar. This event included local leaders such as Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Eagle Mayor James Reynolds. Elder Bednar emphasized gratitude and the Temple’s future impact on the community.
The Meridian Idaho Temple opened to the public during an open house from October 21 to November 11, 2017, where over 200,000 individuals explored its interiors. It was officially dedicated on November 19, 2017, by Dieter F. Uchtdorf, then a member of the First Presidency. His dedicatory prayer offered blessings for all who would participate in the experience.
Architectural Features and Design
The Meridian Idaho Temple is situated on 15.73 acres and features an exterior finished in precast concrete. Its architectural design includes a distinctive central tower and an octagonal dome topped with a statue of the angel Moroni. The building spans an impressive 67,331 square feet, rising to a height of 120.2 feet, and consists of three stories.
Interior Elements
The Temple incorporates several unique design elements:
- Art Glass: The exterior art glass features geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns, adorned with blossoming lily-like flowers. The design symbolizes growth, moving from seed elements at the base to ascending stems.
- Lighting: The Celestial Room is illuminated with multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers, creating a warm ambiance. The fixtures complement various marble finishes throughout.
- Doors and Railings: Interior doors are crafted from durable African mahogany with decorative metal hardware. The baptistry, surrounded by a railing that showcases Prairie-style lines, is made from the same rich wood, highlighting local floral influences.
Grounds and Aesthetic
The Temple grounds offer scenic walkways, ponds, and beautifully landscaped shrubbery. A cupola cap made from titanium changes colors under the sun, adding a stunning visual aspect to the exterior. The 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, hoisted atop the Temple on July 20, 2016, further enhances its grandeur.
Community Engagement and Cultural Activities
A special cultural celebration marked the dedication of the Temple, where nearly 6,000 youth from 16 local stakes gathered at the Taco Bell Arena on Boise State University’s campus on November 18, 2017. This event, themed “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable,” highlighted the importance of faith among young members. President Uchtdorf commended the youth as treasures of the Treasure Valley community, reinforcing their role as future leaders.
