LDS Temple News Presents Meridian Idaho Temple a House of the Lord
The Meridian Idaho Temple was announced publicly on April 2, 2011, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the 181st General Conference. At this time, Meridian was noted as the third largest and fastest-growing city in Idaho, witnessing a 115 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010. In response to this growth, three additional stakes were organized within Meridian and four more in nearby communities like Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton.
The formal groundbreaking took place on August 23, 2014, led by Apostle David A. Bednar, with notable attendees including Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and other civic leaders. Elder Bednar expressed hopes that this Temple would serve as a light of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ for many years to come.
Opening to the Public
An open house was held from October 21 to November 11, 2017, where over 200,000 individuals had the opportunity to tour the Temple before its dedication. On November 19, 2017, the Meridian Idaho Temple was dedicated by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf across three sessions. His dedicatory prayer emphasized the significance of service and the deep ties it creates.
Notable Features
The Meridian Idaho Temple spans 67,331 square feet across three stories and is built on 15.73 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. The exterior finish is crafted from precast concrete, featuring a single attached central tower topped with an octagonal dome and a 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, which was hoisted to the top on July 20, 2016.
The architectural style draws from early Temples, including the Cardston Alberta Temple. The exterior art glass displays geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns with stylized, blossoming lily-like flowers that represent growth, while the interior is adorned with magnificent crystal and bronze chandeliers that bring warmth to the serene atmosphere.
Interior Design
The interior features Sapele African mahogany doors, accentuated with decorative metal hardware. The baptismal font is surrounded by elegantly designed railings made of warm wood, combining decorative metal accents inspired by local Idaho flora.
The Temple’s grounds are beautifully maintained, featuring scenic walkways, ponds, trees, and decorative shrubbery. A cupola adorned in titanium surfacing changes colors with the sunlight, adding a dynamic element to the Temple’s exterior.

Meridian is located just 11 miles west of Boise, the capital city of Idaho, making this Temple the second in Ada County and the fifth in the state. It provides a space for reflection and spiritual connection, serving a growing population eager to engage in its services.
A Celebration of Faith
In a remarkable cultural celebration leading up to the Temple’s dedication, nearly 6,000 local youth participated in a musical event at Taco Bell Arena on the Boise State University campus. The event, titled “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable,” highlighted the importance of faith in the region. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf praised the youth, noting their promise for the future of the community.
In addition, Meridian is notable for being the location of the shortest distance between two Temples outside of Utah, with the Boise Idaho Temple only 8.8 miles away. The Meridian Idaho Temple was the first in the state to be announced by Church President Thomas S. Monson, further solidifying its importance.
