The announcement of the Meridian Idaho Temple occurred on April 2, 2011, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the 181st General Conference. At that time, Meridian was experiencing rapid expansion, becoming the third-largest and fastest-growing city in Idaho. The population surged by 115 percent from 2000 to 2010, prompting the organization of three additional stakes in Meridian and four more in adjacent cities, including Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton. The Temple is located approximately 11 miles west of Boise, Idaho’s largest city.

The groundbreaking event was held on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar. Notable local leaders, including Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Eagle Mayor James Reynolds, joined the occasion. Elder Bednar inspired those present with his remarks, emphasizing the significance of gratitude that should extend beyond the dedication.

The Path to Dedication

The public open house for the Meridian Idaho Temple ran from October 21 to November 11, 2017, drawing over 200,000 attendees. Finally, on November 19, 2017, the Temple was dedicated by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf in three sessions. His dedicatory prayer included a heartfelt request for blessings upon all who would attend and serve in the Temple.

Dedicatory Prayer Insights

In his prayer, Elder Uchtdorf expressed hopes that the Temple would be regarded as a gift worthy of divine presence, exclaiming, “Wilt Thou honor it with Thy presence.” His words captured the aspirations for the Temple, wishing for it to radiate truth and inspire those who approach it.

Architectural and Interior Fascinations

Spanning 15.73 acres, the Meridian Idaho Temple measures 67,331 square feet and includes three stories, reaching a height of 120.2 feet. Its exterior is finished in precast concrete, featuring a central tower topped by an angel Moroni statue, an iconic representation of divine guidance.

Design Elements

The architectural aspects of the Temple draw inspiration from early Temples. Its exterior art glass showcases geometric patterns influenced by Art Deco, with lily-like flowers accentuating the design. Notably, the syringa flower—Idaho’s state flower—adorns the artwork throughout, lending authenticity and regional pride to the Temple’s aesthetics.

Interior Features

The interior is characterized by opulent light fixtures, including breathtaking multi-tiered crystal chandeliers, emanating a warm ambiance. The doors are crafted from Sapele African mahogany, elegantly accented with decorative metal hardware.

The baptistry railing, adorned with Prairie-style lines, includes motifs of local flora, such as the wild meadow flower and syringa, illustrating a thoughtful connection to Idaho’s natural beauty.

In essence, the Meridian Idaho Temple serves not just as a sacred space but as an embodiment of the shared values and cultural heritage of the area. It finds itself at the heart of Meridian’s transformative journey, touching the lives of many and standing as a testament to growth and faith.
