The House of the Lord | Temple

The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a profound symbol of faith and resilience, with its journey beginning with its announcement on October 3, 2019. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, after the groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 1922. This sacred space has seen remarkable milestones, culminating in its dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, once again led by Heber J. Grant.

The temple has repeatedly opened its doors to embrace the community, with an unforgettable open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, followed by a rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the guidance of Spencer W. Kimball. Most recently, the public was invited for an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, leading to its rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally magnificent, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof adorned with sculpted friezes. Within its vast 75,000 square feet, it houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery, standing at 53 feet tall at an elevation of 1,240 feet. Nestled on 20 acres of beautifully manicured land, its exterior combines reinforced concrete with 130 tons of steel, elegantly faced with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Positioned east of the original Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a historic district that retains its cherished residential character. The grounds, lovingly maintained, feature a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools. Each Easter, the community gathers to witness “Jesus the Christ,” recognized as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. During Christmas, the grounds become a breathtaking Nativity display, illuminated by hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is a testament to pioneering spirit, being the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, it is celebrated for its tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.

The temple’s intricate friezes depict the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 modernized the temple, enhancing its facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment, elevating the visitor experience.

The most recent renovation, which began on May 19, 2018, introduced essential upgrades while preserving the temple’s historical essence. These improvements enhance the grounds and beautifully accommodate annual events, ensuring the Mesa Arizona Temple remains a treasured beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
