Temples Mesa Arizona Temple

The Mesa Arizona Temple is a notable landmark with a profound historical significance, announced on October 3, 2019, following its construction origins dating back to the early 20th century. The site was dedicated by Heber J. Grant on November 28, 1921, with the groundbreaking taking place on April 25, 1922. Following years of dedicated efforts, the temple was officially dedicated from October 23 to 26, 1927, also by Heber J. Grant.

Throughout its history, the temple has undergone several enhancements, including a significant open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and a rededication ceremony on April 15-16, 1975, conducted by Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, the temple welcomed the public during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in its rededication on December 12, 2021, led by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple is distinguished by its flat roof and beautifully sculpted friezes. Comprising four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistery, the temple spans 75,000 square feet and reaches a height of 53 feet, located at an elevation of 1,240 feet. It occupies a generous 20 acres, Constructed with concrete reinforced by 130 tons of steel and adorned with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles, it reflects both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Strategically sited just east of the original Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple serves as a cornerstone of a historic district that has thoughtfully preserved its residential character. Its meticulously maintained grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools. The temple is particularly well-known for hosting “Jesus the Christ,” the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant worldwide, each Easter season, while transforming into a stunning Nativity display during the Christmas season, accentuated by hundreds of thousands of holiday lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple holds several significant milestones in its history; it was the first temple built in Arizona and was notable for being the first to present the endowment in a language other than English, initially known as the Arizona Temple. The temple has a rich tradition of showcasing the endowment through live presentations.

With elegantly carved friezes depicting Isaiah’s prophecy of the gathering of the Lord’s people, the temple has seen substantial renovations over the years. The extensive remodeling efforts that began in February 1974 enhanced the temple’s capabilities for modern presentations, transforming various rooms for more efficient single-room film presentations of the endowment. The introduction of additional space and ordinance rooms in subsequent renovations has significantly enriched the experience for visitors.

Most recently, beginning on May 19, 2018, the temple underwent a comprehensive renovation that included essential upgrades to its infrastructure, along with interior enhancements that complement its historical character. The overhaul of the temple grounds aimed to improve the visitor experience during annual events, while also preserving the rich heritage associated with this revered institution.
