The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a distinguished landmark with a profound historical significance. Initially announced on October 3, 2019, the temple’s construction dates back to earlier times. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following the groundbreaking ceremony held on April 25, 1922. Over the years, numerous important milestones were celebrated, including the temple’s dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, also officiated by Heber J. Grant.

Significant renovations were undertaken through the years to enhance this cherished structure. After a public open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, it was rededicated on April 15-16, 1975, under the direction of Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, the temple welcomed visitors again during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in its rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof complemented by sculpted friezes. The building encompasses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistery within its expansive 75,000-square-foot space. It reaches a height of 53 feet and is located at an elevation of 1,240 feet. The temple occupies 20 acres and showcases a sturdy exterior of concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, elegantly faced with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Positioned just east of the original Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a historic district that has maintained its residential ambiance. The meticulously groomed grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and large reflection pools. The temple plays host to the “Jesus the Christ” pageant during the Easter season, the largest annual outdoor Easter celebration in the world, and transforms into a breathtaking Nativity display adorned with hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights during the holiday season.

The Mesa Arizona Temple holds several noteworthy distinctions, being the first temple established in Arizona and pioneering the presentation of the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, it is recognized for its innovative live acting presentations of the endowment.

The intricate friezes that grace the temple’s corners beautifully depict the prophecy of Isaiah regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A comprehensive renovation in February 1974 enhanced its capacity for modern presentations, and subsequent upgrades improved visitor facilities significantly.

The latest renovation effort, which commenced on May 19, 2018, included vital upgrades to infrastructural elements and interior enhancements while being faithful to the temple’s historical character. Careful attention was given to the grounds, ensuring they remain welcoming for annual events while preserving the beauty and integrity of the site.
