The temple, located at 365 N 200 W, boasts a stunning exterior finished in Turkish off-white marble, which adds an air of elegance to its design. One of its most striking features is the single attached spire topped with a gleaming gold leaf statue of the angel Moroni. Interestingly, this particular statue has quite a story; it was originally white but was replaced after being struck by lightning, making its golden counterpart shine even more brilliantly against the Utah sky.
The journey to the Monticello Utah Temple’s completion was rapid and impressive. Groundbreaking took place on November 17, 1997, led by Ben B. Banks, and just eight months later, it opened its doors to the public from July 16 to 18, 1998. The official dedication occurred on July 26 and 27, 1998, performed by the late Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, marking a joyous occasion for the community.
In a show of appreciation for the temple, another public open house was held from November 2 to 9, 2002, before it was rededicated on November 17 of the same year by President Hinckley. Inside, the temple features two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistery, all meticulously designed to provide a space for worship and reflection.
Spanning 11,225 square feet and reaching 66 feet in height, the Monticello Utah Temple sits at a serene elevation of 7,098 feet, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Utah. Additionally, it shares its parking lot with a meeting house, enhancing its role as a central hub for the community.
What makes the Monticello Utah Temple truly unique is its status as the first “small” temple conceived by the vision of President Hinckley. In fact, with a construction timeline of just eight months, it holds the record for the fastest-built temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
