Announced on October 3, 1992, the journey of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple began in earnest. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 9, 1993, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. The public open house ran from August 6, 1996, through September 21, 1996, attracting an impressive 679,217 people who had the opportunity to tour the Temple. The dedication ceremonies followed shortly after, from October 13 to October 19, 1996, also presided over by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple is built on 16.7 acres and showcases a distinctive exterior finish of sierra white granite, complemented by art glass windows and bronze doors.
Key Design Aspects
- The architectural design features a single attached end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue.
- Inside, there are four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and one baptistry.
- With a total area of 107,240 square feet, this magnificent building stands at a height of 190 feet and sits at an elevation of 4,764 feet, making it an impressive sight.
Adaptability and Location
The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple is the ninth Temple built in Utah and the second in Utah County. Its design includes an adaptive floor plan that is very similar to that of the Bountiful Utah Temple.
Historical Significance
On July 17, 1995, a ceremony marked the installation of the gold leafed Angel Moroni statue, attended by around 20,000 people. Interestingly, the land on which the Temple was built was originally church welfare land.
Inscription
“Holiness to the Lord” is inscribed twice on the building, once prominently on the exterior above the east windows and again etched into the glass near the west entrance, signifying its spiritual importance.
