Announced on October 3, 1992, the journey to create the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple began in earnest. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 9, 1993, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. After three years of development, the Temple opened its doors to the public from August 6, 1996, through September 21, 1996, attracting over 679,217 attendees.
Dedication and Design
The dedication of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple occurred over six days, from October 13 to October 19, 1996, also conducted by President Hinckley. Covering 16.7 acres, this spacious retreat features a stunning sierra white granite exterior adorned with art glass windows and bronze doors. The architectural design includes a prominent single attached end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Inside the Temple
This expansive building encompasses 107,240 square feet and rises to a height of 190 feet, situated at an elevation of 4,764 feet. The interior includes four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The Temple presents an adaptive floor plan that closely resembles that of the Bountiful Utah Temple.
A Testament of Faith
The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple is the ninth Temple built in Utah and the second Temple in Utah County. Notably, the land on which it is built was originally church welfare land. Among the inscriptions on this remarkable building is “Holiness to the Lord,” which appears twice—once on the exterior above the east windows and another time etched into the glass near the west entrance.
