The journey to establishing the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple began with its announcement on October 3, 1992. Shortly thereafter, on October 9, 1993, ground was broken, and the site was dedicated by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Following several years of anticipation, the Temple opened its doors for a public open house from August 6, 1996, to September 21, 1996. This event attracted an impressive 679,217 attendees who toured the Temple during this period.
The official dedication of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple took place over several days, from October 13 to October 19, 1996, also led by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
Designed with a stunning exterior, the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple is clad in sierra white granite and features exquisite art glass windows and bronze doors. At a height of 190 feet, the Temple is visually striking, crowned by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue atop a single attached end spire. This particular Temple is built on 16.7 acres of land originally designated for church welfare purposes and holds a floor area of 107,240 square feet.
Inside the Temple
The interior of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple is thoughtfully designed. It includes four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and one baptistry, enabling a variety of sacred functions to take place within its walls. The adaptive floor plan resembles that of the Bountiful Utah Temple, offering a functional yet contemplative space for all.
Elevation and Unique Inscription
Sitting at an elevation of 4,764 feet, the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple provides a breathtaking backdrop against the majestic Wasatch Range. A notable feature of the Temple is the inscription “Holiness to the Lord,” which appears twice: once above the east windows on the exterior, and the other etched into the glass near the west entrance.
Significance in Utah
As the ninth Temple constructed in Utah, the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple serves as the second Temple in Utah County, further enhancing the spiritual landscape of the region. The installation of the gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue on July 17, 1995, attracted about 20,000 onlookers, marking another significant moment in its history.
