Discovering the Draper Utah Temple: A Piece of Architectural Beauty

Nestled at the base of the stunning Wasatch mountains, the Draper Utah Temple, located at 14065 Canyon Vista Ln, Draper, Utah, stands as a testament to dedication and faith. With a majestic height of 166 feet and covering 58,300 square feet, this iconic structure is a true celebration of artistry and spiritual significance.

A Journey Through Time

The journey of the Draper Utah Temple began on October 2, 2004, when it was first announced. The groundbreaking and site dedication followed on August 5, 2006, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who remarked, “It is a great tribute to our people. They are so faithful in temple attendance, and it is for this reason that we construct this beautiful house of the Lord.” This sentiment highlights the profound role that such places play in the lives of many.

The anticipation reached its peak with the public open house, which ran from January 15 to March 14, 2009, allowing an impressive 684,721 guests to explore the beauty and detail of the Temple.

Architectural Marvels

The exterior is adorned with white granite sourced from China, while limestone from France adds an additional layer of elegance. The single attached central spire prominently features a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, installed on July 8, 2008.

Inside, the Draper Utah Temple boasts four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all designed to uplift and inspire. The largest sealing room accommodates 80 patrons, while the ordinance rooms feature exquisite hand-painted panoramas depicting mountain scenes and the breathtaking views of Draper’s Corner Canyon and the Salt Lake Valley.

Natural light floods into the baptistry, located on the western side of the building, through spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the 221 exterior and 50 interior windows, along with 432 door panels, totaling a remarkable 35,420 hand-cut pieces of glass. The design cleverly incorporates the Log Cabin quilt pattern, paying homage to the early pioneers of the region.

The Temple is set on 12 acres of beautifully landscaped land, with a parking area that accommodates up to 492 vehicles.

Thematic Inspirations

The Draper Utah Temple beautifully incorporates the theme of the sego lily, Utah’s state flower, weaving a local touch into its overall design. Additionally, Makore wood from Africa features prominently in the interior, adding warmth and richness to the surroundings.

Having been the twelfth temple built in Utah and the third in the Salt Lake Valley, the Draper Utah Temple continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many. It sits gracefully alongside a meeting house, creating a serene environment for reflection and connection.
