The announcement for the Oakland California Temple was made on January 23, 1961. Just over a year later, on May 26, 1962, the first ground-breaking and site dedication took place, officiated by Prophet David O. McKay. The Temple was first opened for public viewing from October 5th to 31st in 1964, allowing many to experience its beauty and significance.
The Temple’s second dedication occurred from November 17th through the 19th, also by Prophet David O. McKay, signifying the completion of its construction phases. After many years, the Temple underwent renovations culminating in a third public viewing from May 11 to June 1, 2019, followed by its rededication on June 16, 2019, led by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.
Architectural Features
Covering an area of 80,157 square feet and sitting at an elevation of 664 feet, the Oakland California Temple reaches a height of 170 feet. Its exterior is crafted from reinforced concrete adorned with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California. Noteworthy architectural elements include a central spire complemented by four smaller spires, creating an inspiring silhouette against the skyline.
Inside the Temple
Inside, the Oakland California Temple is thoughtfully designed with four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, facilitating various activities. It was also the first Temple in the USA to be designed for film presentations in its instruction rooms.
Significant Moments in History
A visionary experience in April 1928 led Elder George Albert Smith to foresee the Temple. During a meeting at the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill, he expressed that a white temple would one day grace the East Bay hills, serving as an invitation to the world. This prophecy, made by Brigham Young, was fulfilled with the construction of the Oakland California Temple, which overlooks the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Temple is further adorned with two 35-foot sculpted panels depicting Jesus Christ teaching, adding to its visual and spiritual significance. Cascading waterfalls and creek-style water features enhance the serene environment surrounding the Temple grounds and contribute to an atmosphere of tranquility.
