The journey towards the establishment of the Oakland California Temple began on January 23, 1961, when the announcement was made, laying the groundwork for what would become a prominent feature in the Bay Area. The first groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on May 26, 1962, led by Prophet David O. McKay. This marked the beginning of a transformative era.

The Dedication and Open Houses

The Oakland California Temple opened its doors to the public for the first time during an open house held from October 5 to October 31, 1964. Just weeks later, the Temple was dedicated from November 17 to 19, 1964, also presided over by Prophet David O. McKay. The Temple saw another public open house from May 11 to June 1, 2019, culminating in a rededication on June 16, 2019, led by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.

Architectural Features and Design

Occupying 18.1 acres, the Oakland California Temple is an impressive 80,157 square feet in size and reaches a height of 170 feet, sitting at an elevation of 664 feet. The exterior features a stunning finish of reinforced concrete complemented by Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California. The Temple is distinguished by a central spire flanked by four smaller spires, marking its presence on the skyline of the Bay Area.

Water Features and Scenic Views

The grounds of the Temple include cascading waterfalls and creek-style water features, promoting a sense of tranquility and beauty. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Area, making it an inviting place for reflection and contemplation.

Rooms and Facilities

Inside, the Oakland California Temple is designed with functionality in mind, featuring four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Notably, it was the first temple in the United States designed for film presentations in the instruction rooms. Additionally, two 35-foot sculpted panels depicting Jesus Christ teaching add an artistic dimension to the interior.

Prophetic Visions

The creation of the Oakland California Temple also fulfills a prophecy made by Brigham Young, who stated, “in process of time the shores of the Pacific may be overlooked from the temple of the Lord.” This has become a fulfilling aspect of its presence, as it serves as an impressive sight overlooking the Bay.

The Oakand California Temple, previously referred to as the Oakland Temple, was the second of its kind built in California. Its historic significance is matched only by its architectural beauty and the spiritual fulfillment it represents for many.

In summary, the Oakland California Temple stands as a remarkable achievement that blends history, architecture, and community together, offering a unique experience for all who engage with its rich heritage.
