On January 23, 1961, plans for this significant addition were officially announced, and the first ground breaking occurred on May 26, 1962, led by the Prophet David O. McKay.

The first public open house took place from October 5th through 31st, 1964, allowing many to experience the beauty of the Temple before its initial dedication.
