The journey of the Oakland California Temple began with a vision in April 1928. Elder George Albert Smith, during a meeting with the San Francisco stake president, saw a “great white temple of the Lord” gracing the hills, an image that would later inspire many. On January 23, 1961, plans for this significant addition were officially announced, and the first ground breaking occurred on May 26, 1962, led by the Prophet David O. McKay.
The first public open house took place from October 5th through 31st, 1964, allowing many to experience the beauty of the Temple before its initial dedication. Over the years, this site has undergone significant milestones, including a second dedication held from November 17th through 19th and the third public open house from May 11 to June 1st, 2019. The Temple was rededicated on June 16, 2019, by the Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, marking its continuing significance within the faith.
Architectural Features
