The origins of the Oakland California Temple trace back to April 1928, when Elder George Albert Smith had a profound vision during a meeting at the Fairmont Hotel. He envisioned a white Temple perched upon the East Bay hills, offering a warm welcome to travelers entering the Golden Gate. This vision materialized decades later on January 23, 1961, when the project was announced. The foundation was laid on May 26, 1962, when Prophet David O. McKay presided over the site dedication.

The Journey to Completion

The Temple’s first public open house ran from October 5th through 31st in 1964, providing the public a glimpse of its grandeur before its second dedication took place from November 17th to the 19th, officiated again by Prophet McKay. In a twist of modern development, a third public open house occurred from May 11 to June 1, 2019, culminating in its rededication on June 16, 2019, led by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.

Architectural Marvel

Spanning 80,157 square feet and reaching a height of 170 feet, the Oakland California Temple stands as an impressive feat of engineering. It is built on 18.1 acres and situates itself at an elevation of 664 feet, allowing it to overlook the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. The exterior combines reinforced concrete with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California, creating a stunning visual against the landscape.

Unique Features

The design is characterized by a central spire surrounded by four smaller spires, echoing elements of classic architectural styles. Notably, two 35-foot sculpted panels depict Jesus Christ teaching, adding a unique artistic touch. The Temple is equipped with four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, further enhancing its functional capacity.

A Fulfillment of Prophecy

Brigham Young once foresaw that one day, “in process of time the shores of the Pacific may be overlooked from the temple of the Lord.” The Oakland California Temple stands as a realization of this prophecy, inviting reflection and appreciation for both its spiritual and cultural significance.

In summation, the Oakland California Temple not only enriches the skyline of Oakland but also carries a narrative of vision, dedication, and architectural excellence that continues to inspire many.
