The journey of the Oakland California Temple began with its groundbreaking and site dedication on May 26, 1962, led by Prophet David O. McKay. Following the completion of construction, the first public open house was held from October 5 to October 31, 1964. Shortly thereafter, a second dedication took place from November 17 to November 19, 1964, also presided over by Prophet McKay.
Fast forward to 2019, this Temple opened its doors again for the third public open house from May 11 to June 1, culminating in a rededication on June 16, 2019, officiated by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.
Architectural Features
Covering an impressive 18.1 acres, the Oakland California Temple stands at 80,157 square feet with a height of 170 feet. Its exterior, finished in reinforced concrete with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California, is striking. The Temple features a central spire along with four smaller spires, making it a distinct feature of the skyline.
One of the more mesmerizing aspects of the site includes cascading waterfalls and a creek-style water feature, enhancing the aesthetic appeal. The Temple is built upon an elevation of 664 feet, providing a panoramic view of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Unique Design Elements
The design of the Oakland California Temple holds a special place in history. It was the second Temple established in California and initially referred to as the Oakland Temple. Moreover, it was the first in the United States to be constructed with instruction rooms specifically designed for film presentations.
H4: Prophetic Vision
Interestingly, the vision for this Temple can be traced back to April 1928, when Elder George Albert Smith shared a spontaneous vision of its location during a meeting. He described a “great white temple” as an “ensign” to those traveling through the Golden Gate into the region.
H4: Instruction and Function
Internally, the Temple is equipped with four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, facilitating various religious purposes.
Artistic Elements
Two 35-foot sculpted panels, depicting Jesus Christ teaching, contribute to the sacred atmosphere of the Oakland California Temple, making it a thoughtful tribute to its significance.
In conclusion, the Oakland California Temple is not only a beautiful example of sacred architecture but also a site rich in history and prophetic vision, making it an important aspect of Oakland’s identity.
