The origins of the Oakland California Temple date back to January 23, 1961, when its construction was first announced. The first ground breaking took place on May 26, 1962, under the direction of the Prophet David O. McKay. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a vision that had been anticipated since 1928 when Elder George Albert Smith envisioned a “great white temple of the Lord” overlooking the East Bay hills during a meeting atop Nob Hill.
The temple formally opened its doors to the public for the first time from October 5 to October 31, 1964. This event was followed by its dedication, held from November 17 to November 19 of the same year, again presided over by Prophet McKay. The Oakland California Temple became the second temple in California, enriching the spiritual landscape of the region.
Recent Developments
The temple underwent significant restoration and enhancements, leading to a third public open house from May 11 to June 1, 2019. This was complemented by its rededication on June 16 of the same year by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks. These updates reflect ongoing commitment to its mission and service.

The Oakland California Temple spans an impressive 80,157 square feet and is notable for its height of 170 feet. Sitting on an elevation of 664 feet, it provides a panoramic view of the San Francisco Bay area.
