The Ogden Utah Temple proudly stands as the 14th dedicated temple in operation, a beacon of faith and community. Its journey began with a significant announcement on August 24, 1967, igniting enthusiasm among members and supporters alike. The first site dedication on September 8, 1969, led by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, marked a momentous occasion that set the stage for what was to come.
The groundbreaking ceremony, also on September 8, 1969, was spearheaded by Hugh B. Brown, signaling the start of a remarkable construction process. After years of anticipation, the temple opened its doors for a public open house from December 16-30, 1971, welcoming an incredible 181,000 guests who were eager to experience its beauty and spiritual resonance.
The official dedication, held from January 18-20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, solidified the temple’s significance in the community. Fast forward to August 1 through September 6, 2014, when the temple hosted its second open house, leading to its rededication on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This reaffirmed the temple’s vital role in the lives of its members.
Located on 9.96 acres in the heart of downtown Ogden, the temple is a stunning architectural marvel finished with granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its commanding central spire, topped with a glorious gold-leafed angel Moroni statue, captures the eye and spirit of all who view it. Inside, the temple features six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all within an expansive 112,232 square feet of sacred space.
Soaring to an impressive height of 188 feet and 8 inches and situated at an elevation of 4,299 feet, the temple enhances its surroundings with captivating water features, vibrant trees, and meticulously manicured grounds, providing a serene refuge for all visitors.
Notably, the Ogden Utah Temple was the fifth temple constructed in Utah and holds the distinction of being the first dedicated in the state—historically significant as it came 80 years after the previous four were consecrated when Utah was still a territory. A poignant moment in its dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee stepped in to complete the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue.
