The Ogden Utah Temple is a powerful symbol of faith and community, proudly standing as the 14th dedicated temple in operation. Its journey commenced on August 24, 1967, with the announcement that ignited excitement and anticipation throughout the region. The first site dedication took place on September 8, 1969, with Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer leading the momentous occasion.
That same day, Hugh B. Brown conducted the groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of a significant architectural endeavor. The temple’s first public open house ran from December 16-30, 1971, where an astounding 181,000 guests flocked to witness its beauty and spiritual significance.
The official dedication of the temple, held from January 18-20, 1972, was presided over by Joseph Fielding Smith, establishing its permanent place in the hearts of the community. Fast forward to its second open house from August 1 through September 6, 2014, and the triumphant rededication on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, which further solidified its importance.
Strategically located on 9.96 acres in downtown Ogden, the temple features a striking exterior crafted from granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its architectural elegance is unmistakable, highlighted by a single central spire topped with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. Inside, visitors will find six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all within a generous 112,232 square feet—a true sanctuary for reflection and worship.
Towering at an impressive 188 feet and 8 inches, the temple sits at an elevation of 4,299 feet, enhancing its visual grandeur. The estate is complemented by beautiful water features, lush trees, and meticulously manicured grounds, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere for all who come to visit.
Remarkably, the Ogden Utah Temple not only stands as the fifth temple built in Utah, but it also holds the distinction of being the first dedicated in the state—80 years after the previous four were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. A particularly poignant moment during its dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee finished the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue, showcasing the profound spirit of unity and devotion that surrounds this sacred place.
