Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple Temple News

Nestled in the serene landscapes of South Jordan, Utah, the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple stands as a breathtaking testament to both architectural beauty and spiritual significance. Located at 11022 S 4000 W, this stunning temple was announced on October 1, 2005, capturing the hearts of the community. Just over a year later, on December 16, 2006, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, led by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.

The temple’s first public open house, held from June 1 to August 1, 2009, welcomed eager visitors to experience its intricate beauty, culminating in an official dedication from August 21 to 23 of the same year, officiated by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. Covering 11 acres, the temple is a remarkable 60,000 square feet, soaring to a height of 183 feet and perched at an elevation of 4,783 feet.

Crafted with care, the temple’s exterior gleams with Uinta Gold Granite sourced from China, while the elegant pavers are made from Wyndam Grey Granite from the Qingdao area. Its striking architectural features include a single attached spire topped with a majestic gold leafed angel Moroni statue, which faced an unusual episode when lightning struck it on June 13, 2009, blackening Moroni’s trumpet, arm, and face. Remarkably, a new statue was installed just in time for the dedicatory services, ten days later!

Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by the warmth of light limestone from Morocco and darker limestone from Egypt, showcasing the temple’s commitment to exquisite craftsmanship. The interiors boast intricate woodwork made from Rift-cut White Oak imported from Indiana and Kentucky, with stunning veneers adorning the doors, crafted from White Oak and Sycamore sourced from the German Alps.

Among its crowning jewels are the chandeliers, particularly the awe-inspiring 15-foot tall Celestial Room chandelier, adorned with an impressive 19,447 Swarovski crystals that seem to dance with light. The bronze door handrails, made right here in the USA, further enhance the temple’s elegance.

Artistic touches abound with murals beautifully painted by dedicated church service missionaries, transforming every corner into a piece of heavenly inspiration.

The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple is not just the thirteenth temple built in Utah and the fourth in the Salt Lake Valley; it is a beacon of hope, faith, and community spirit, inviting all to explore its sacred spaces and rich history.
