In his uplifting closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exciting news about the Provo Utah Temple: it’s set for a transformative journey featuring demolition and reconstruction, kicking off after the Orem Utah Temple dedication. The current temple will officially close its doors on Saturday, February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work and paving the way for a beautiful new facility. During this transitional period, members in the area are encouraged to visit nearby temples and make appointments for their sacred ordinances.
The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be a stunning addition to Provo’s east bench, nestled at the mouth of Rock Canyon, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. Picture a serene landscape with a cascading water feature, lush flowers, and trees celebrating the area’s natural beauty. Just across the street, the vibrant Provo Missionary Training Center bustles with young missionaries preparing for their journeys, infusing the neighborhood with a spirit of dedication.
Spanning an impressive 163,000 square feet on 17 acres, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will offer six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries. The temple will be officially renamed on February 20, 2024, and the original structure will close and be demolished shortly after, with reconstruction anticipated to be complete by late 2027. This new architectural marvel will blend traditional and contemporary styles, featuring elegant arched windows and a graceful multi-level tower topped with a shining spire, representing a refreshing departure from the original mid-century modern design.
Not only will the temple meet modern seismic standards for safety, but it will also be equipped with energy-efficient systems, underscoring a commitment to sustainability. The inviting entrance will feature three grand white arches, radiating warmth and welcoming all who enter. Notably, the impressive new design will not include the iconic Angel Moroni statue, signaling a fresh approach.
The expansive 17-acre grounds will harmoniously combine hardscaping elements with an eye-catching oval feature at key intersections, enhancing both functionality and beauty while blending seamlessly with the breathtaking surroundings of Rock Canyon. The landscaping will focus on using native, drought-tolerant plants, reflecting a modern commitment to environmental stewardship, with a diverse array of trees and seasonal flowers to create visual interest throughout the year.
Visitors can look forward to picturesque water features and serene garden terraces, providing a peaceful escape and enriching the spiritual experience. The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple is set to become a vibrant sanctuary, beautifully reflecting its surroundings and the cherished values of its visitors. With its dedication to modern design and sustainability, this temple promises to be a cherished landmark—a beacon of peace and inspiration for all.
