In his uplifting closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exciting news about the Provo Utah Temple’s future. Set to transform through demolition and reconstruction, this project will begin after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. Mark your calendars—February 24, 2024, will be the last day for ordinances at the current temple, clearing the way for an inspiring new facility. Members in the temple district are encouraged to explore nearby temples during this time and to schedule appointments for their personal ordinances.
Introducing the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, which will rise majestically on Provo’s east bench, right at the mouth of the stunning Rock Canyon. Imagine breathtaking mountain views framing this sacred space! The expansive temple grounds will feature a serene cascading water feature, complemented by a vibrant array of flowers, shrubs, and trees, all celebrating the region’s natural beauty. Just across the street is the Provo Missionary Training Center, a lively hub where thousands of young missionaries prepare for their journeys, infusing the area with dedication and purpose.
With about 163,000 square feet of bright, inviting space on 17 acres, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, thoughtfully designed to serve the needs of temple patrons. The renaming of the temple will take place on February 20, 2024, leading up to the original structure’s closure and demolition on February 24, 2024. Reconstruction is already in progress, with the new temple slated for completion in late 2027. It will showcase a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary architecture, featuring elegant arched windows and a striking multi-level tower topped by a gleaming spire, a fresh departure from the former mid-century modern design.
Safety and sustainability are paramount, as the new temple will be built to meet current seismic codes and will feature energy-efficient electrical, heating, and plumbing systems. A standout aspect of the design is the three grand white arches at the main entrance, inviting all who enter with warmth and grace. Whereas the original temple had the iconic Angel Moroni statue, this new design will embrace a fresh perspective.
The extensive 17-acre grounds will beautifully harmonize hardscaping with nature, featuring concrete curbing, sidewalks, and an oval-shaped feature at key intersections that enhances both function and beauty, all while integrating seamlessly with the breathtaking backdrop of Rock Canyon.
The landscaping will prioritize native, drought-tolerant plants, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable landscaping practices. Expect a carefully curated selection of trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers that ensure year-round vibrancy and gracefully complement the temple’s refined architectural style.
Picture calming water features surrounded by lush plants thriving in a more moist environment, creating a peaceful oasis for visitors. Just like other temples, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will boast manicured garden terraces and symmetrical walkways, beautifully balancing structure and nature to enhance the spiritual journey of everyone who visits.
As this magnificent new temple takes shape, it promises to become a beloved sanctuary that reflects the beauty of its surroundings and embodies the values of all who step through its doors. With its dedication to modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple is set to be a cherished landmark and a beacon of peace for many.
