In a moment of inspiration during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exciting plans for the Provo Utah Temple. It will embark on a remarkable transformation marked by demolition and reconstruction, with work set to commence after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will officially close its doors on February 24, 2024, signaling the end of its ordinance work and making way for a stunning new facility. Members in the area are encouraged to embrace nearby temples during this transition and schedule appointments for their personal ordinances.
The newly named Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will grace the east bench of Provo, nestled at the mouth of the breathtaking Rock Canyon. Surrounded by majestic mountains, it will offer a serene backdrop that enhances its spiritual presence. Visitors can expect beautifully landscaped grounds featuring a cascading water feature, flanked by a vibrant array of flowers, shrubs, and trees that celebrate the region’s natural beauty. Just across the street, the bustling Provo Missionary Training Center adds to the lively spirit of dedication in the area, where countless young missionaries prepare for service around the world.
Spanning an impressive 163,000 square feet on a generous 17-acre site, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all designed to create an inviting environment for temple patrons. On February 20, 2024, the temple will be officially renamed, and celebration will follow as the original structure is closed and eventually demolished. With reconstruction underway and completion expected by late 2027, the new temple will showcase a delightful blend of traditional and contemporary architecture—long, elegant arched windows and a striking multi-level tower culminating in a gleaming golden spire will replace the old mid-century modern design.
In addition to its architectural elegance, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be built to meet modern seismic codes, ensuring safety and resilience. It will incorporate energy-efficient electrical, heating, and plumbing systems, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
One of the standout features will be the three grand white arches at the main entrance, radiating warmth and welcome. Continuing modern construction trends, the temple’s exterior will use state-of-the-art materials, with essential waterproofing underway. Notably, unlike its predecessor, the new temple will forgo the iconic Angel Moroni statue on its spire, marking a significant design departure.
The expansive grounds will harmoniously blend hardscaping with functional pathways, featuring an oval-shaped design at key intersections that enhances both practicality and visual appeal. The landscaping will prioritize native, drought-tolerant plants, reflecting a commitment to sustainability while ensuring year-round beauty with diverse trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers.
Anticipated picturesque water features will add a calming element, inviting visitors to relax amidst lush greenery. With manicured garden terraces and symmetrical walkways, this temple will beautifully marry structured and organic designs, enhancing the spiritual experience for all who enter.
As the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple takes shape, it promises to be more than a house of worship—it aims to be a refreshing, welcoming sanctuary that reflects the area’s natural beauty and the values of its community. With its modern design, commitment to sustainability, and spiritual significance, it is poised to be a cherished landmark and a beacon of peace for many.
