Temple News Articles Provo Utah Rock Temple

In an uplifting announcement during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exciting plans for the Provo Utah Temple. This beloved landmark will undergo a remarkable transformation through demolition and reconstruction, beginning after the Orem Utah Temple is dedicated. The current temple will officially close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, marking the end of its ordinance work and making way for a vibrant new facility. Until then, members are encouraged to explore nearby temples, ensuring they can continue their sacred ordinances.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be nestled on Provo’s picturesque east bench, right at the entrance of the stunning Rock Canyon. With breathtaking mountain views as its backdrop, the temple’s grounds will be a serene escape, featuring an inviting cascading water feature surrounded by a colorful array of flowers, shrubs, and trees that celebrate the natural beauty of the region. Just across the street lies the Provo Missionary Training Center, buzzing with energy as young missionaries prepare for their service, adding a spirit of dedication to the area.

Spanning an impressive 163,000 square feet on a generous 17-acre site, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will offer six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries—all thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming and uplifting environment for all temple patrons.

On February 20, 2024, the temple will officially be renamed the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, symbolizing its connection to the breathtaking landscape. Celebration will follow as the original structure closes and is demolished on February 24, 2024. Reconstruction is set to begin, with completion projected for late 2027. The new temple will blend traditional elegance with contemporary design, showcasing graceful, long arched windows and a stunning multi-level tower capped by a gleaming spire, offering a fresh contrast to its mid-century predecessor.

Safety and sustainability are paramount in the new design, which will adhere to current seismic codes and feature energy-efficient systems for electrical, heating, and plumbing. At the main entrance, three grand white arches will welcome visitors with warmth. While the original temple featured the iconic Angel Moroni statue, this new design will take a different approach, embracing a modern aesthetic.

The expansive grounds will feature a harmonious blend of hardscaping, with beautifully designed walkways and a unique oval-shaped feature at key intersections, ensuring both practicality and visual appeal while harmonizing with Rock Canyon’s natural beauty. The landscaping will embrace native, drought-tolerant plants, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and creating a vibrant environment throughout the year.

Serene water features will further enrich the atmosphere, surrounded by lush plants that thrive in a moist environment. Visitors will enjoy meticulously manicured garden terraces and symmetrical pathways, striking a balance between structured beauty and natural charm, enhancing the spiritual experience for everyone who enters.

As the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple rises, it promises to be more than just a house of worship; it will be a welcoming refuge that reflects the stunning landscape and the values of those who visit. With its focus on modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance, the temple will serve as a cherished landmark and a beacon of peace for many.
