In his closing remarks at the October 2021 General Conference, Russell M. Nelson announced the Provo Utah Temple’s upcoming transformation through demolition and reconstruction, set to begin after the Orem Utah Temple’s dedication. The current temple will close on February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work and paving the way for a new facility. Members are encouraged to use nearby temples to continue participating in sacred ordinances.
The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be located on Provo’s east bench near Rock Canyon, offering a stunning mountain backdrop. The spacious grounds will include a cascading water feature and a variety of flowers and trees, enhancing the area’s natural beauty. Additionally, it’s close to the Provo Missionary Training Center, where many missionaries prepare for their service.
With approximately 163,000 square feet on a 17-acre site, the new temple will feature six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, providing an inviting environment for patrons. The temple’s name change to Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will occur on February 20, 2024, and the original structure will be closed and demolished shortly after.
The new temple will have a contemporary architectural design with elegant arched windows and a multi-level tower topped by a golden spire, reflecting a shift toward timeless elegance. It will be built to current seismic codes, with energy-efficient systems and sustainable features.
The design includes three grand arches at the main entrance to create a welcoming atmosphere. The exterior will use modern materials, and construction is currently underway, focusing on safety and durability.
The temple grounds will feature a mix of hardscaping and landscaping, emphasizing native, drought-tolerant plants to support sustainable practices. Beautiful water features will add to the serene ambiance, along with manicured gardens and symmetrical walkways to enhance the spiritual experience.
As it takes shape, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be a place of worship and a peaceful retreat, embodying modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance. It aims to be a cherished landmark for the community.
