In his closing remarks at the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced significant changes to the Provo Utah Temple. It will be demolished and rebuilt after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple, with closure set for Saturday, February 24, 2024. Members in the temple district should use nearby temples for sacred ordinances during this time. Those needing personal ordinances can make appointments at neighboring temples.
The new temple, named Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, will be located on Provo’s east bench at the mouth of Rock Canyon, surrounded by mountains. The temple grounds will feature cascading water and a variety of plants, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. The Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) is nearby, adding a spirit of dedication to the location.
The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be approximately 163,000 square feet on a 17-acre site, including six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all designed for an inviting experience. It will be officially renamed on February 20, 2024, and the original structure will close and be demolished on February 24, 2024. The new temple is expected to be completed by late 2027, featuring a blend of traditional and contemporary design, including long arched windows and a multi-level tower with a golden spire. Unlike its predecessor, the new design will not have the Angel Moroni statue.
Safety is a priority, with construction meeting current seismic codes and incorporating energy-efficient systems. The main entrance will feature three grand white arches, and the exterior will follow modern construction standards. The 17-acre grounds will include concrete curbing, sidewalks, and an oval-shaped feature, enhancing both practicality and aesthetics.
The landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants, supporting sustainability and creating an inviting atmosphere with a variety of trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers. Water features surrounded by moisture-loving plants will add to the serene ambiance. The temple grounds will balance structured and organic designs with manicured terraces and symmetrical walkways.
Overall, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will serve as a house of worship and a welcoming sanctuary, showcasing modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance—a cherished landmark for the community.
