The Palmyra New York Temple stands not only as a stunning architectural marvel but also as a significant landmark in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This temple, which is the 77th to be dedicated, is nestled in a serene location at 2720 Temple Rd, Palmyra, New York, covering an impressive five acres.
The journey to its completion began on February 21, 1999, when the temple was announced, followed by an inspiring groundbreaking ceremony on May 25, 1999, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. The anticipation crescendoed to a public open house from March 25 to April 1, 2000, before the formal dedication on April 6, 2000—a date of profound significance as it coincided with the 170th anniversary of the Church’s founding in Fayette, New York.
Radiating purity and beauty, the temple’s exterior is adorned with Bethel white granite, featuring a striking single spire topped with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. Inside, the temple spans 10,900 square feet, providing sacred spaces that include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, designed to facilitate spiritual experiences for its visitors.
Perched at an elevation of 578 feet, the temple sits on an elevated area just beyond the hallowed grounds of the Sacred Grove—the very site where Joseph Smith experienced his pivotal vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ in the spring of 1820. This location is rich in history, as the temple is situated on the original Smith Family Farm, covering 100 acres, with the temple elegantly positioned at the east end of the property.
One of the temple’s more unique features is its stained glass windows, which beautifully depict elements of the Sacred Grove, capturing the essence of the divine experience that occurred there. Notably, this temple holds the distinction of being the first to be built in New York and also marks the 100th temple announced by the Church—a remarkable milestone in its growth and mission to provide sacred spaces for Temple work and spiritual renewal for members inside.
