Palmyra New York Temple

Palmyra New York by LDS Temple News

The Palmyra New York Temple is such a wonderful and inspiring place! As the 77th temple dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it’s a true gem located at 2720 Temple Rd, in the lovely town of Palmyra, New York.

The temple’s story began back on February 21, 1999, when it was first announced. Just a few months later, on May 25, 1999, the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley led the groundbreaking ceremony, setting the stage for this special place. After a public open house from March 25 to April 1, 2000, the temple was officially dedicated on April 6, 2000—how cool is it that this date marks exactly 170 years since the Church was organized in Fayette, New York?

The Palmyra New York Temple is beautifully constructed with Bethel white granite and features a single, elegant spire topped with a stunning gold-leaf angel Moroni statue. Inside, it offers several inviting spaces, including two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to help you connect with your spirituality.

Situated on five lush acres at an elevation of 578 feet, this temple is located just a stone’s throw from the Sacred Grove—a truly sacred site where Joseph Smith first saw God and Jesus Christ in the spring of 1820. It’s remarkable to note that this temple is the very first one built in New York and holds a special place in the hearts of Latter-day Saints as the 100th temple announced!

Another delightful feature of the Palmyra New York Temple is its gorgeous stained glass windows, which beautifully depict scenes of the Sacred Grove. The temple rests on what used to be the original Smith Family Farm, and you can really feel the rich history and spirit here. Whether you’re visiting for Temple work, reflection, or just to take in the peaceful surroundings, the Palmyra New York Temple is a truly magical place to be!
