The announcement for the Palmyra New York Temple was made on February 21, 1999, marking an important milestone for the Latter-day Saints. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 25, 1999, officiated by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This led to a public open house that ran from March 25th through April 1, 2000, allowing individuals to explore its features before the formal dedication.
On April 6, 2000, the Temple was dedicated by the same prophet who initiated its construction. Notably, this date coincided exactly with the 170th anniversary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ organization, which occurred in Fayette, New York, on April 6, 1830.
Architectural Features
The Palmyra New York Temple spans 10,900 square feet and rests at an elevation of 578 feet. Its exterior is finished with stunning Bethel white granite, making it aesthetically pleasing and unique. One of the most defining architectural features is the single attached spire crowned with a gold-leaded statue of the angel Moroni.
Inside the Temple
Inside, the Palmyra New York Temple provides two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, each designed to accommodate specific purposes. The stained glass windows are noteworthy, featuring etchings of the sacred grove, which holds great significance in the history of the Church.
Geographic Significance
The Temple’s location is particularly meaningful; it is situated just beyond the Sacred Grove, the site where God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith in the spring of 1820.
