The journey to creating the Phoenix Arizona Temple began on May 24, 2008, when the Prophet Thomas S. Monson announced its establishment. He conveyed his vision for the Temple, stating, “The blessings of the Temple are eternal. Those who come to this holy house will feel of God’s love for His children and come to a greater understanding of their own divine origin and potential as His sons and daughters.”
The official groundbreaking occurred on June 4, 2011, led by Apostle Ronald A. Rasband, marking a significant milestone in the Temple’s development. After years of anticipation, the public open house took place from October 10th through November 1, 2014, allowing many to experience its beauty. The dedication was celebrated on November 16, 2014, again officiated by Thomas S. Monson.
Design and Features
Architectural Aspects
Spanning 5.19 acres, the Temple encompasses 64,870 square feet and reaches a height of 90 feet. Its exterior finish consists of precast integral colored concrete panels, harmonizing with the Arizona landscape. Notably, the architectural design features a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, which was placed on May 15, 2013.
The interior is crafted with elegance, featuring African Sapele wood doors, complemented by bronze door hardware and railings surrounding the baptismal font.
Artistic Touches
Art plays a vital role within the Temple. The exterior and interior art glass creatively uses designs inspired by the Agave plant and blossoms. The murals in the instruction rooms depict the stunning Arizona landscape, offering a unique touch to the atmosphere.
Celestial Room
In the Celestial Room, a striking stained-glass skylight replaces the traditional large central chandelier, creating a serene ambiance for reflection and tranquility.
Community and Accessibility
The Phoenix Arizona Temple is strategically situated alongside a chapel in the same shared parking area, enhancing the accessibility of both locations. As the first Temple built in the city and the third in Maricopa County, it represents a significant spiritual commitment for the region.
The establishment of this Temple marks the fifth in Arizona, reinforcing a strong connection for those who hold its teachings dear.
Conclusion
The Phoenix Arizona Temple not only enhances the architectural beauty of the city but also serves as a profound center for learning and personal development. Those who are drawn to this Temple often find inspiration and a deeper understanding of their faith and purpose. The thoughtful design and artistic elements create an environment conducive to reflection, making it a cherished part of the Phoenix area.
