The announcement of the Grand Junction Colorado Temple was made on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the General Conference. This announcement marked the beginning of a new chapter for the church in Colorado, where the first mission was established in 1896 and the first official congregation was formed in January 1897. As of the announcement date, Colorado boasted over 150,000 Latter-day Saints and approximately 310 congregations. This temple is the third in the state, following the Denver Colorado Temple built in 1986 and the Fort Collins Colorado Temple in 2016.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

The ceremonial dedication of the House of the Lord took place on April 16, 2022, led by Apostle Chi Hong Sam Wong of the Quorum of the Seventy. This event was particularly poignant as it occurred the day before Easter Sunday. Elder Wong expressed gratitude for the Atonement of Jesus Christ in his dedicatory prayer, emphasizing a spirit of positivity as the sacred ground was dedicated.

Architectural Features

The Grand Junction Colorado Temple spans 29,630 square feet and is situated on 7.93 acres of land. Its exterior is finished with Portuguese Pedras Salgadas granite, which complements the rugged high-desert surroundings. The House of the Lord rises to a height of 118 feet and 8 inches, enclosed by an Ameristar Montage Plus Majestic fence that adds a sophisticated bronze finish.

Interior Elegance

The interior design incorporates a palette inspired by the area’s natural beauty, featuring shades of crimson, amber, green, and pale pink. This color scheme reflects the claret cup cactus and other regional flora. The flooring includes Mineo marble, accented by various types of marbles that evoke the essence of southwestern canyon landscapes.

The House of the Lord also showcases exquisite artwork, including pieces by Ken Stockton and Wilson Hurley. These artworks celebrate the stunning vistas of the American West, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the temple.

Unique Details

The temple’s artistic touches extend beyond visual elements. The baptismal font railing incorporates an intertwining geometric motif, symbolizing the convergence of the two rivers at Grand Junction. The craftsmanship extends to the millwork that features African sapele hardwood, designed with a peach blossom motif reminiscent of local orchards.

Furthermore, crystal chandeliers and antique brass fixtures illuminate spaces such as the bride’s room and celestial room, enhancing the overall atmosphere of elegance. Custom-designed carpets and area rugs add warmth and texture, creating an inviting setting.
