The announcement of the Pocatello Idaho Temple came on April 2, 2017, marking the beginning of an exciting journey for the area. The groundbreaking and dedication of the site occurred on March 16, 2019, led by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. Following its completion, the public open house took place from September 18 to October 23, 2021, attracting an impressive 250,721 guests. The Temple was officially dedicated on November 7, 2021, by Apostle M. Russell Ballard. During the dedicatory prayer, he expressed hopes for prosperity and faithfulness for all who would enter.
Architectural Features
The Pocatello Idaho Temple covers an expansive 71,125 square feet and rises to a height of 194 feet 6 inches. It is built on 10.94 acres, beautifully landscaped with over 500 trees and thousands of flowers. The exterior showcases white granite sourced from China, complemented by its distinctive architectural features, including a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed statue of Angel Moroni.
Interior Highlights
Inside, the Temple boasts four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Among its striking interior features is a grand staircase clad in elegant travertine limestone. The chapel area features exquisite stained glass depicting Jesus Christ holding a lamb. The stained glass windows creatively showcase wildflowers native to the Idaho mountain desert, such as the syringa, the state flower, and the bitterroot.
Landscaping and Surroundings
The grounds are meticulously landscaped with a variety of trees, including Norwegian sunset maples, sawleaf zelkovas, and Dolgo crabapples. Bright flowering shrubs like English lavender, snowberry, and snow queen hydrangeas enhance the site’s beauty. Along the perimeter, a selection of white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines reflect the natural vegetation of the surrounding mountains.
Accessibility and Visibility
The Pocatello Idaho Temple is easily visible from both Interstate 15 and Interstate 86, making it a prominent feature in the landscape. This Temple is the sixth of its kind in Idaho, a testament to the significant growth and interest in the area. Interestingly, Pocatello was initially scheduled to have its first Temple in the 1930s, but due to water obstacles, the realization of this dream was postponed until the contemporary construction of the Pocatello Idaho Temple.
