Pocatello Idaho Temple an LDS Temple
Announced on April 2, 2017, the Pocatello Idaho Temple marked a long-awaited chapter in the region’s history. Groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on March 16, 2019, led by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. The anticipation culminated in a public open house from September 18 to October 23, 2021, where an impressive 250,721 attendees experienced this sacred space.
The Temple was dedicated on November 7, 2021, by Apostle M. Russell Ballard, who offered blessings for the faithfulness and happiness of all who would engage with this holy house. His prayer expressed a heartfelt wish for the youth and children to feel divine love as they visit and serve within.
Architectural Features
Location and Design
Situated at 3100 Butte St Pocatello, Idaho 83201, the Pocatello Idaho Temple spans 10.94 acres and occupies a height of 194 feet 6 inches. This architectural marvel boasts an impressive 71,125 square feet and is visible from both Interstate 15 and Interstate 86.
The exterior is clad in white granite sourced from China, creating a striking visual presence. A notable feature is the single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue that draws the eye upwards.
Interior Highlights
Inside, visitors can find four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry designed to serve various needs. A grand staircase made of travertine limestone adds elegance to the interior. The chapel area features stunning stained glass depicting Jesus Christ holding a lamb, along with vibrant wildflower designs that represent Idaho’s natural beauty, including the syringa, the state flower.
The stained glass also incorporates colors that resonate with the local landscape: sage green symbolizes the sagebrush, gold reflects the region’s wild grasses, and pink and coral signify the picturesque sunsets and flora of Pocatello.

The Temple grounds are a beautiful combination of natural elements, featuring over 500 trees and a multitude of flowering plants. The dominant tree species of Norwegian sunset maple, sawleaf zelkova, and Dolgo crabapple add diversity and richness. Shrubs like English lavender, snowberry, and snow queen hydrangea were selected for their vibrant blooms, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Surrounding the perimeter, white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines echo the indigenous flora of the nearby mountains, further rooting the site in its local environment.
Historical Significance
Interestingly, Pocatello was initially slated to be the location of the first Idaho Temple back in the 1930s. However, due to obstacles related to water, this vision was postponed until the announcement in 2017. The establishment of the Pocatello Idaho Temple completes a long-awaited promise to the region.
