The journey of the Pocatello Idaho Temple began with its announcement on April 2, 2017. After years of anticipation, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 16, 2019, led by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. This marked the commencement of an exciting phase in the construction of the Temple.
A public open house was held from September 18th through October 23rd, 2021, drawing an impressive total of 250,721 visitors. The highlight of this journey can be traced to November 7, 2021, when the Temple was dedicated by Apostle M. Russell Ballard. During the dedication, Elder Ballard conveyed heartfelt blessings and prayers for the community and its youth, emphasizing the significance of the sacred space.
Architectural Features
Covering 10.94 acres, the Pocatello Idaho Temple exhibits stunning architectural features. The exterior is clad in white granite sourced from China, giving the building a majestic appearance. Prominently, a single attached central spire is topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, symbolizing peace and guidance.
Inside, the Temple encompasses 71,125 square feet and includes four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The interior design incorporates a grand staircase, elegantly clad in travertine limestones, providing a striking entryway. One notable aspect of the chapel area is a stained glass window depicting Jesus Christ holding a Lamb, which adds a profound visual and spiritual element to the space.
Landscaping and Surroundings
The landscaping surrounding the Pocatello Idaho Temple adds to its overall beauty. More than 500 trees and thousands of flowers have been planted, featuring a variety of species. The dominant trees on site include Norwegian sunset maple, sawleaf zelkova, and Dolgo crabapple. The shrubs, such as English lavender, snowberry, and snow queen hydrangea, were chosen for their vibrant colors.
A perimeter of white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines pays homage to the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains, creating a harmonious connection with the environment. The Temple is strategically located near Interstate 15 and Interstate 86, making it visible to travelers and locals alike.

While plans for a Temple in Pocatello date back to the 1930s, challenges related to water resources delayed its realization until the announcement in 2017. This Temple is now the sixth to be built in Idaho, adding to the religious fabric of the region.
