The Pocatello Idaho Temple has a rich history that began with its announcement on April 2, 2017. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on March 16, 2019, officiated by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. Following this, the public open house ran from September 18 through October 23, 2021, where a remarkable 250,721 people explored the grounds and facilities. The Temple was officially dedicated on November 7, 2021, by Apostle M. Russell Ballard. During the dedication, Elder Ballard expressed heartfelt wishes for those who enter, emphasizing the importance of faith and connection in this sacred space.
Architectural Splendor
The exterior of the Pocatello Idaho Temple features striking white granite from China. Its architectural design includes a single attached central spire that is topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, a feature that emphasizes its significance and beauty. The Temple spans 71,125 square feet and stands at an impressive height of 194 feet 6 inches, located at an elevation of 4,989 feet.
Thoughtful Landscaping
Covering 10.94 acres, the Temple grounds are adorned with over 500 trees and thousands of colorful flowers. The landscaping includes Norwegian sunset maple, sawleaf zelkova, and Dolgo crabapple trees. Shrubs such as English lavender, snowberry, and snow queen hydrangea add vibrancy to the surroundings. The perimeter is lined with a combination of white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines, chosen for their local significance.
Interior Features
Inside, the Pocatello Idaho Temple features four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. A grand staircase clad in travertine limestone serves as a notable feature, enhancing the interior design. The chapel area includes captivating stained glass depicting Jesus Christ holding a lamb, and additional stained glass windows celebrate Idaho’s natural beauty by showcasing wildflowers like the syringa, the state flower, and the bitterroot.
Artistic Touches
The art glass displays colors inspired by the local landscape—sage, gold, pink, and coral—representing elements such as sagebrush, wild grasses, sunsets, and local flora. The rendering for the Temple was publicly released on March 1, 2019, allowing the community to glimpse its anticipated beauty before its completion.
Accessibility and Location
Prominently visible from Interstate 15 and Interstate 86, the Pocatello Idaho Temple is a significant presence in the area. It is worth noting that plans for a Temple in Pocatello date back to the 1930s; however, challenges delayed this vision until its current realization in 2017.
