The initiation of the Portland Oregon Temple began with an announcement on April 7, 1984. Following this announcement, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 30, 1986, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. The extensive construction period culminated in a public open house from June 15 through July 8, 1989, where an impressive 314,232 individuals explored the Temple. The dedication of the Temple occurred from August 19 through August 21, 1989, also presided over by Prophet Hinckley.
