The journey of the Portland Oregon Temple began on April 7, 1984, when it was announced to the public. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 30, 1986, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. After years of anticipation, the Temple’s public open house ran from June 15 through July 8, 1989, drawing an impressive attendance of 314,232 individuals. The Temple was officially dedicated from August 19 to August 21, 1989, once again officiated by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features and Design
Covering 7.3 acres, the Portland Oregon Temple showcases stunning architectural features that capture the eye. The exterior displays radiant white Vermont marble walls adorned with a green Vermont slate roof. Six attached spires and four domes rise prominently, crowned by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni that adds a touch of elegance.
Interior Highlights
The Temple spans 80,500 square feet and reaches a total height of 181 feet, perched at an elevation of 235 feet. Inside, visitors can find a celestial room boasting a two-story design, complete with three chandeliers, exquisite wall tapestries, and a grand staircase. The altars are crafted from white marble, enhancing the serene environment. Additionally, the Temple is equipped with fourteen sealing rooms, a baptismal font, and four instruction rooms to facilitate various activities.
Scenic Grounds
Surrounding the Portland Oregon Temple are beautifully maintained grounds featuring Douglas fir trees. The scenic reflection pool on the east side and the infinity pool on the west side add to the serene atmosphere. Those traveling along I-5 will find the Temple easily visible, making it a familiar sight for many.
