History of the Portland Oregon Temple
The journey to the Portland Oregon Temple began with its announcement on April 7, 1984. Ground was broken for the Temple on September 30, 1986, in a ceremony led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for a revered space, which would open its doors to the public later.
The public open house took place from June 15 to July 8, 1989, attracting an impressive 314,232 individuals. Following this, the Temple was officially dedicated from August 19 to 21, 1989, once again under the direction of Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
Spanning 80,500 square feet and built on 7.3 acres, the Portland Oregon Temple is notable for its striking design. The exterior features stunning white Vermont marble walls complemented by a green Vermont slate roof. Six spires and four domes adorn its profile, culminating in a gold-leafed Angel Moroni that graces its apex.
The interior of the Temple includes fourteen sealing rooms, a baptistry, and four instruction rooms, all designed to facilitate various activities. A grand celestial room rises two stories high, showcasing three chandeliers and exquisite wall tapestries, with a grand staircase serving as its centerpiece.
