The story of the Portland Oregon Temple began on April 7, 1984, when its construction was announced. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 30, 1986, presided over by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. After years of anticipation, the public open house occurred from June 15 through July 8, 1989, attracting an impressive 314,232 individuals. Following the open house, the dedication was performed from August 19 through August 21, 1989, once again led by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Highlights
Covering 7.3 acres, the Temple features an exterior comprised of pristine white Vermont marble walls complete with a green Vermont slate roof. Five attractive spires and four elegant domes contribute to its visual allure, crowned by a beautifully gold-leafed Angel Moroni.
Inside, the Temple encompasses 80,500 square feet and rises to a height of 181 feet at an elevation of 235 feet. Notable features include fourteen sealing rooms, a baptistry, four instructional rooms, and a large assembly hall designed to accommodate a variety of needs. The celestial room is truly spectacular, showcasing a two-story layout adorned with three chandeliers, exquisite wall tapestries, and a grand staircase that enhances its majesty.

Surrounded by Douglas fir trees, the Temple grounds offer a picturesque environment. On the east side, a tranquil reflection pool invites contemplation, while an infinity pool on the west side adds to the serene atmosphere. For those driving on I-5, the Temple is clearly visible, offering a striking addition to the landscape.
