Wichita Kansas Temple A Love Story

Wichita Kansas Temple

Nestled in the heart of one of Kansas’ most populous cities, the Wichita Kansas Temple is set to become a significant place of devotion in the region. This sacred House of the Lord represents an important milestone, being the first dedicated in the state. With a rich history, this House of the Lord not only serves the spiritual needs of local members but honors Kansas’s long-standing connection to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

House of the Lord Details

The design of the Wichita Kansas Temple features a single attached central tower, distinguished by its elegant simplicity—minus a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Spanning a total of 9,950 square feet, this single-story House of the Lord includes essential spaces such as one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry, all aimed at supporting various spiritual functions.

Dedication and Leadership

The dedication of the Wichita Kansas Temple is a significant upcoming event. Apostle Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside over this important occasion, scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 10 a.m., with a rebroadcast planned for 2 p.m. Leading this House of the Lord will be the first Temple President and Matron, Brian and Linda Rawson, who will guide the spiritual mission of this sacred space.

Historical Context

Wichita holds a unique place in the history of the Latter-day Saints in Kansas. The local chapter’s roots can be traced back to 1831, when missionaries taught the Shawnee and Delaware people about their faith. The first branch of the church in Wichita was formally organized in 1882, marking the beginning of a growing presence in the central part of the state. Today, Kansas is home to nearly 40,000 Latter-day Saints, actively meeting in around 75 congregations.

Open House Details

Anticipation is high for the upcoming open house, scheduled from September 24, 2026, through October 10, 2026. However, there will be no events held on Sundays, and notably, there will be no public open house on October 3, 2026. This will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to experience the House of the Lord before its formal dedication.

Elevation and Other Features

The Wichita Kansas Temple sits at an elevation of 1,327 feet, further contributing to its distinctive presence within the landscape. The rendering for this House of the Lord was made public on July 22, 2024, offering a glimpse into what this sacred space will look like upon completion.

A New Chapter for Kansas

As the first Temple in Kansas, the Wichita Kansas Temple is not just a new chapter for the 40,000 Latter-day Saints in the state but also a testament to the longstanding faith and commitment of its members. This House of the Lord will serve as a center for reflection, learning, and connection within the broader context of the community it serves.
