Following this announcement, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 7, 1982, officiated by the esteemed Prophet Spencer W. Kimball. Since then, it has become a vital spiritual sanctuary for many.
The temple has been dedicated three times, with the most recent dedication occurring on May 1, 2011. This dedication was particularly significant as it was led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, marking the first time he dedicated a temple in the Southeastern United States.
Architecture and Design
Occupying a spacious 9.6 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, the Atlanta Georgia Temple boasts an impressive 34,500 square feet . The temple reaches a height of 93.3 feet and is situated at an elevation of 1,092 feet, providing a stunning view of its surroundings.
One of the temple’s most striking features is the single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, an inspiring sight for both visitors and members of the community.
