A Historic Beginning
The journey of the Birmingham Alabama Temple began on September 11, 1998, when it was officially announced to the public. Its groundbreaking ceremony and site dedication took place almost a year later on October 9, 1999. The event was led by Stephen A. West, marking a significant milestone in the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alabama.
A Sacred Dedication
After nearly a year of construction and preparation, the temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley on September 3, 2000. This dedication opened the doors for faithful members to participate in ordinances and find spiritual refuge in this beautiful house of the Lord.
An Open House and Public Engagement
Prior to its dedication, an open house was held from August 19 through August 26, 2000, welcoming a total of 21,134 visitors who toured the temple’s stunning interior and grounds. This event allowed community members to see the sacred space and learn about its purpose and significance.
Architectural beauty and design
The temple is situated at 1927 Mount Olive Blvd in Gardendale, Alabama, on a sprawling 5.6-acre lot that includes a chapel sharing the parking lot. Its exterior boasts imperial Danby white marble, quarried from Vermont, giving it a luminous and pristine appearance. The architectural design features a single attached spire adorned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, symbolizing the temple’s sacred purpose.
Interior Features
Inside, the Birmingham Alabama Temple spans approximately 10,700 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry—facilities dedicated to worship and sacred ordinances central to Church doctrine.
A Community Treasure
Perched at an elevation of 661 feet, the temple stands as a beacon of faith in Alabama. During the winter season, the temple displays a nativity scene, adding to its festive and spiritual ambiance. Its grounds have been recognized for their beauty, earning a beautification award from the city of Gardendale, highlighting the community’s pride in this sacred landmark.
