A Timeline of Significance

The journey of the Birmingham Alabama Temple began with its announcement on September 11, 1998, marking the start of a new chapter for Latter-day Saints in Alabama. The temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication was conducted on October 9, 1999, by Elder Stephen A. West, who helped set the foundation for this sacred space.

Following construction, the temple opened its doors to the public during an open house held from August 19 to August 26, 2000. During this week, an impressive 21,134 visitors toured the temple, experiencing its beauty and learning about its significance. The temple was officially dedicated on September 3, 2000, by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, dedicating it as the 98th dedicated temple of the Church in operation worldwide.

Architectural and Design Features

The Birmingham Alabama Temple is situated on a 5.6-acre lot at 1927 Mount Olive Blvd, Gardendale, AL 35071, built at an elevation of 661 feet. Its exterior is constructed from imperial Danby White marble, quarried from Vermont’s scenic mountains, giving it a radiant and elegant appearance.

Architecturally, the temple features a single attached spire adorned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, a symbol of the Church’s message of peace and the Restoration of the Gospel. Inside, the temple encompasses 10,700 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, serving the spiritual needs of local members.

A Beautiful and Community-Recognized Temple

The Birmingham Alabama Temple is celebrated not only for its spiritual importance but also for its beautiful grounds, which received a beautification award from the city of Gardendale. During the winter months, visitors and members alike enjoy a nativity display placed at the temple, adding to its festive and spiritual ambiance.
