Nestled in the foothills of Bountiful, Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This remarkable place embodies the faith’s architectural beauty and spiritual significance.
History and Construction
The announcement for the Bountiful Utah Temple was made on February 2, 1990, setting the stage for a significant journey. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 2, 1992, led by Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, with an impressive attendance of 7,500 people, along with an additional 2,500 participating remotely.
Following several years of anticipation, the public open house was held from November 4 to December 17, 1994. During this time, an astonishing 870,361 individuals explored the Temple, supported by an incredible 45,000 volunteers who helped facilitate the event.
The dedication of the Temple occurred from January 8 to January 14, 1995, presided over by Prophet Howard W. Hunter. Remarkably, in his brief tenure, he dedicated just one other Temple, the Orlando Florida Temple. A total of 28 dedicatory sessions were held, drawing 201,655 attendees to witness this momentous occasion.
Architectural Features
Covering 9 acres, the Bountiful Utah Temple features a two-story parking garage with the most convenient access located on the west side of the grounds. The exterior is beautifully finished with Bethel white granite, creating a stunning visual against the backdrop of the surrounding landscape.
A striking feature is the single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which serves as an iconic representation visible from miles away. The Temple itself encompasses 104,000 square feet and stands at an impressive height of 176 feet, situated at an elevation of 5,160 feet.
Unique Sightlines and Surroundings
Situated on the east bench, the Bountiful Utah Temple offers sweeping views of the city of Bountiful and the Great Salt Lake. Its prominent position among the foothills ensures that the Temple is easily identifiable from various vantage points, including the I-15 freeway.
Facilities
Inside, the Temple features four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a single baptistry, designed to accommodate the needs of those who seek to engage in its sacred activities. This Temple is notable as the first to be constructed in Davis County and the eighth within the state of Utah.
The floor plan reflects that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, though the surrounding grounds create entirely unique vistas at both sites.
Restoration and Care
The Angel Moroni statue, an important emblem of the Temple, was struck by lightning on May 22, 2016. It was replaced shortly thereafter, on June 1, 2016. Interestingly, this particular Angel Moroni was initially intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple before finding its home atop the Bountiful Utah Temple.
