Nestled on the scenic east bench of Bountiful, Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With its stunning architecture and rich history, this site captures the attention of many who live nearby and beyond.
A Journey Through Time
The announcement of the Bountiful Utah Temple was made public on February 2, 1990, marking the beginning of a significant journey for the area. The groundbreaking occurred on May 2, 1992, conducted by the Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, where an impressive 7,500 people gathered to celebrate this momentous occasion, complemented by an additional 2,500 participants joining remotely.
The anticipation built over the years culminated in a public open house from November 4 to December 17, 1994. During this time, an astounding 870,361 individuals experienced the Temple’s beauty, supported by the tremendous effort of 45,000 volunteers who helped facilitate the event.
The dedication of this magnificent space took place from January 8 through January 14, 1995, under the direction of Prophet Howard W. Hunter. In his brief time in office, he dedicated only one other Temple—the Orlando Florida Temple. The dedication of the Bountiful Utah Temple featured 28 sessions, with 201,655 individuals witnessing this remarkable event.
Architectural Marvel
Covering an area of 104,000 square feet, the Bountiful Utah Temple is an impressive sight. The exterior, crafted from Bethel white granite, gives it a distinct and elegant appearance. Its iconic features include a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed statue of Angel Moroni, enhancing its stature as a prominent feature against the skyline.
With a height of 176 feet and positioned at an elevation of 5,160 feet, the Temple is easily distinguishable from various points in Bountiful and along the I-15 freeway. The view from its grounds overlooking the Great Salt Lake is nothing short of breathtaking.
The Temple’s interior includes four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a baptistry, providing a range of spaces dedicated to various religious practices. Notably, the floor plan of the Bountiful Utah Temple is similar to that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, although each site offers a unique backdrop that complements its surroundings beautifully.
A Recent Event
In a striking incident on May 22, 2016, the Angel Moroni statue was struck by lightning. However, it was promptly replaced on June 1, 2016, ensuring the Temple’s iconic silhouette remained intact. Interestingly, this replacement statue was initially intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple but found its home atop the Bountiful Utah Temple instead.
