A Historic Significance by LDS Temple News
The announcement for the Cleveland Ohio Temple was made by President Russell M. Nelson in April 2022. During this announcement, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the eternal blessings that come from the Temple, saying, “I plead with you to counter worldly ways by focusing on the eternal blessings of the temple. Your time there brings blessings for eternity.”
Ohio is home to nearly 66,000 Latter-day Saints who gather in almost 130 congregations. The Cleveland Ohio Temple will be the second dedicated house of the Lord in the state. The Columbus Ohio Temple was dedicated in 1999, and the Cincinnati Ohio Temple was announced in April 2024.
Ohio’s Rich Church History by LDS Temple News
Ohio has a rich history for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, being the site where many crucial events occurred. It is also home to the Kirtland Temple, the Church’s first house of the Lord, which was built there. Since the 1830s, the Community of Christ had preserved the Kirtland Temple until March 2024, when stewardship was transferred to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This historic Temple is situated only a short distance from the newly constructed Cleveland Ohio Temple.
Purpose and Significance of Temples by LDS Temple News
Latter-day Saints regard each Temple as a house of the Lord, making it the most sacred place of worship on earth. Temples serve a different purpose than the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). While all are encouraged to attend Sunday services and other activities at local meetinghouses, Temples are designed primarily for the faithful members to partake in sacred ceremonies. These include marriages that unite families for eternity and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized during their lives.
As anticipation builds for the Cleveland Ohio Temple, it marks a meaningful addition to the spiritual journey of Latter-day Saints in Ohio and beyond, reflecting their commitment to faith and eternal principles.
