LDS Temple News Presents the Historical Context
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Cleveland Ohio Temple in April 2022, emphasizing the spiritual importance of such places. He stated, “I plead with you to counter worldly ways by focusing on the eternal blessings of the Temple. Your time there brings blessings for eternity.”
Ohio has a rich history with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, being home to nearly 66,000 members organized into almost 130 congregations. The Cleveland Ohio Temple will be the second dedicated house of the Lord in the state. The Columbus Ohio Temple was dedicated in 1999, and plans for the Cincinnati Ohio Temple were announced in April 2024.
LDS Temple News Presents the Historical Significance of Ohio
Many pivotal events in the history of the church occurred in Ohio. Notably, the Kirtland Temple, the church’s first house of the Lord, was built here. Since the 1830s, the Community of Christ has preserved this significant site, with stewardship of the Kirtland Temple transferred to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March 2024. The Kirtland Temple is conveniently located just a short distance from the newly constructed Cleveland Ohio Temple.
LDS Temple News Presents The Purpose of Temples
Latter-day Saints regard each Temple as a house of the Lord and consider it the most sacred place on earth. Temples serve a distinct purpose compared to the church’s meetinghouses (chapels). While everyone is encouraged to attend Sunday services and other activities at local meetinghouses, the primary function of temples is to facilitate sacred ceremonies. These ceremonies include marriages that unite families for eternity and proxy baptisms conducted on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the chance to be baptized during their lifetime.
As the Cleveland Ohio Temple prepares to open its doors, anticipation continues to grow among members and the local area. The upcoming events mark a new chapter in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ohio.
